Uncontrolled water from a rain storm has the capability to do tens of thousands of dollars damage to your home. Properly installed and maintained gutters are designed to control the flow of rainwater and direct the runoff away from the house. If your gutters are not installed correctly and routine gutter cleaning is not established gutters will become clogged, allowing water to cascade down the side of your house saturating your foundation, destroying landscaping and causing wood rot within your roof and fascia boards. Cleaning your gutters and downspouts regularly to ensure they are clear of sticks and leaves will keep the water flowing freely and directed away from your home, preventing undesired water damage and undue repairs.
When should I clean my gutters?
Gutter cleaning should happen at least once a year. If you have overhanging trees gutter cleaning should be done more frequently.
How do I clean my gutters?
- An extension ladder in good working order will be required, inspect all rungs and locks for any signs of damage before use. Ladder horns are recommended to prevent damage to your gutters.
- Safety glasses and rubber gloves are recommended
- Remove any loose debris such as leaves and sticks. Use a small scoop to remove any buildup of muck.
- Save your lawn and some clean up and place a tarp beneath your work area to catch the debris from the gutter cleaning.
- Once the muck and debris are cleared from the gutter, flush them thoroughly with a garden hose. Pay close attention to the connections and downspouts as this is the perfect time to check for leaks. This is also an excellent opportunity to ensure your gutters are sloped correctly and water is running towards the downspouts and not sitting stagnant in a low spot. Leaks should be repaired with the proper silicone designed for gutters.
Should I have a professional gutter cleaning done?
If you do not have the proper ladder or you are not comfortable up on a ladder then having a professional take care of your gutter cleaning is probably the best choice for you.

There are a variety of different types of gutter covers available that will prevent sticks and leaves from entering your gutters causing clogs. The cost for the covers can sometimes be more than the gutters themselves, but as the old adage says “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of repair”.
